Minnette Carter passed away May 14th comfortably and quietly to join her Creator and her husband. Minnette was born June 16, 1927 in Marshall, Texas to Mike Harkrider and Ruth Whaley Harkrider. In high school Minnette was a majorette, a talent and energy she later channeled into her adult passions. While at Centenary College in Shreveport, LA, she joined Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and met the love of her life, Thomas H. Carter. After marrying in 1948, they embarbarked on a thirty year journey with the United States Coast Guard, taking them all over the globe. As an officer's wife, Minnette served as President of the Coast Guard Wives Club and accompanied her husband as they hosted Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip in Boston during the Bicentennial. The love of traveling, broadening her talents, and making new friends continued into retirement. Minnette was a member of the Houston Garden Club, associate of the Junior League of Houston, an antique appreciator, a gourmet cook, and dog lover. Her greatest pleasures, however, were spending time with family and friends, telling jokes, and playing bridge.

Minnette was preceded in death by her parents Mike and Ruth Harkrider, her grandparents Eugene Whaley and Minnie Heartsill Whaley, and her husband Capt. Thomas Houston Carter, Sr. (ret). She is survived by her sister Gene Bradford (James), daughter Cynthia Carter Crabtree (Charlie) and son Thomas H. Carter, Jr. (Colleen); her grandchildren, Sean (Lacy), Maura, and Katie Carter; and her great grandchildren, Kayla Pounds and Christopher Quinby; a number of much loved nephews, nieces, cousins; her extended family of traveling companions and bridge partners in Houston; and her beloved companions and her caregivers at Waltonwood of Cary.

A memorial service will be held June 13th in the Independent Living Garden Club room at Waltonwood of Cary, 750 SE Cary Parkway, Cary, NC at 11:00AM. Family will greet friends after the service. Minnette will be buried beside her husband at Arlington National Cemetery.
