Carl W. Sofley, 88, of Cary, NC passed away on October 10th, 2016.

Carl was born on December 3, 1927 to the late Henry Hayes and Ethel Allen Sofley. In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his brother, Allen and his sister, Elizabeth Henderson.

He grew up in Yadkin County where his family ran a dairy farm. After graduating from North Carolina State College, he served in the Korean War. He then worked for the Federal Department of Agriculture. After retiring, he worked for the NC State Department of...

Carl W. Sofley, 88, of Cary, NC passed away on October 10th, 2016.

Carl was born on December 3, 1927 to the late Henry Hayes and Ethel Allen Sofley. In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his brother, Allen and his sister, Elizabeth Henderson.

He grew up in Yadkin County where his family ran a dairy farm. After graduating from North Carolina State College, he served in the Korean War. He then worked for the Federal Department of Agriculture. After retiring, he worked for the NC State Department of Agriculture.

He was an active member of White Plains United Methodist Church where he served in many positions including Chairman of the Board, Chairman of the Staff Parish, and Chairperson of Religion and Race. He was also an Adult Sunday School teacher.

The church and his family were always the focus of his life. He had a tender heart for the less fortunate which was shown in his works with White Christmas, Meals on Wheels, and soup kitchens. His compassion for others was also shown in his strong support for the Democratic Party and the candidates he believed cared about the welfare of all people in all situations.

He was active in sports, golf, gardening (especially azaleas and roses), and he enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his his wife of 57 years, Millicent P. Sofley; sons Dr. C. Wilson Sofley, Jr. (Fran), Henry (Lisa), Allen, daughter Marcia, grandsons Matthew and Brian, and many cherished cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 15th, 2016, 2:00 p.m. at White Plains United Methodist Church, followed by a reception.
